Hearing English, joining in activities and recognising words all help — but none of it replaces the clear development of reading. A child can spend hours a week in English and still reach nine or ten years old guessing at words.
When it is worth investigating
If your child avoids reading, guesses, reads hesitantly, or seems well below what you would expect for their age and exposure, it is worth looking more closely.
